Training checklists for new volunteers are accessed via the volunteers 'Tasks' in Volaby. Below is an example of the 1st shift checklist a Team Leader will complete with the flexible volunteer.
Team Leader instructions
We want our volunteers to be as hands-on as possible from their first shift. This checklist covers shift operations from start to end. You should demonstrate the task first and then ask the volunteer to
perform it.

Pre-shift
- Service Provider check in
- Before any shift explain to the volunteer we check in with the service provider and advise where to find them

- Pre-shift huddle
- Explain to the volunteer this is completed with the team before any shift to share new information (ie. incidents, van FYIs)
- Site specific environment
- Tell the volunteer what to expect from this shift, any previous incidents or friends to be aware of
- Safe places & safe word
- Point out the two safe places to the volunteer and remind them of the safe word
- Wearing gloves
- Explain gloves must be worn when handling unwashed clothing and while cleaning
- Manual handling
- Explain the importance of using correct manual handling throughout shift as covered in the volunteers induction
Safe shift setup
- Unpacking the van
- Explain the unpacking process and get the volunteer to help with lifting out tubs, baskets, trip guards, etc.
- Hose setup
- Demonstrate how to reel out the clean hose and then ask the volunteer to reel out the waste hose placing trip guards down
- Control panel
- Instruct the volunteer to turn on control panel and explain the purpose of each icon and button (system, tap & toilet, battery)
- Charging the van
- Show the location of power for external charging and how to setup (if applicable). Explain the other methods of charging.
- Awning operation
- Demonstrate and ask the volunteer to assist in the setup of the awning (if the weather is suitable)
Safe shift operations
- Standard of Behaviour & Terms of Use poster
- Talk through the points on the poster and explain when it is helpful to use
- Sorting process
- Explain how we ask friends to sort and shake washing into a basket and that our preference is for friends to load the machines
- Magnet system & starting a wash cycle
- Take the volunteer through the friends names on magnet system and how to start a wash cycle
- Cleaning washing machines between cycles
- Explain how the washing machines should be wiped out after each wash if any debris from the previous load was left
- Tank point system (if applicable)
- Explain the tank point system and ask the volunteer to update the whiteboard throughout shift (if operating from water tanks)
- Drying process
- Take the volunteer through how to load and start drying cycle. Explain the purpose of the red light and how to clean the lint
- Returning washing to friends
- Explain the process of returning washing to friends and the process for uncollected washing (never keep it in the van)
- Plugging in external items
- Explain for safety we are not able plug external items (such as mobile phones, hair trimmers etc) into the vans charging point
Safe shift pack down
- Washing machines
- Demonstrate and ask the volunteer to clean and clamp the washing machines
- Hose pack down
- Demonstrate how to reel in the clean hose and then ask the volunteer to reel in the waste hose placing trip guards away
- Control panel
- Instruct the volunteer to turn off the relevant buttons (ie. tap, toilet and system) on the control panel
- Service provider checkout
- Explain the importance of advising the service provider when the team leaves. If appropriate introduce the volunteer to the SP
- Reporting
- Show the volunteer how complete an activity (shift) report and incident report
