Prevent Hose Reel Over Extension

The following article provides a solution to prevent the over extension of the hose reel used in Orange Sky vans. This solution is only to be used on the open stainless steel hose reels (not the blue enclosed Retracta reels).

Tools Required 

  • Medium sized zip tie 
  • Side cutters (or similar) 

Instructions 

Locate both the clean (blue) and waste (green) water hose reels.
  • Laundry Van: inside the side hatch 
  •  Hybrid Van: inside rear door

Reel out the hose until there is one loop or rotation left on the reel.

  • Place the zip tie around the extended part of the hose and the remaining hose on the reel
  • Pull the zip tie until firmly secured - do not over tighten as it may crush or block the hose
  • Cut the excess off the zip tie using side cutters or something similar.

  • Retract the hose back onto reel
  • Repeat the same process for waste water hose.

Note: If a hose reel is extended to the point of the zip tie and the volunteers can’t retract the reel. Simply cut the zip tie off. This will allow the user to gently pull further on the reel and have it retract. It is recommended to attach another zip tie if this event occurs.
Recommend checking the zip tie is still fitted on a fortnightly basis.
