Article Summary

Purpose: To create an environment that is safe and free from crime.

Scope: This policy applies to all members of the Orange Sky family, namely board members, employees, volunteers and contractors.

Introduction

Orange Sky aims to create an environment that is safe and free from crime. We do not condone any form of criminal activity within the Orange Sky environment and all members of the Orange Sky family have a duty of care to report criminal behaviour to the police and internally via the incident reporting process.
If you are unsure whether or not to report a crime, you can speak to your service manager or someone at Orange Sky HQ in the first instance. You can also speak to the police informally, either on the phone or in person. The police can give you information on what you need to do and what actions the police will take, but they will not do anything unless you want them to.

In an Emergency

As a member of public you must immediately phone Triple Zero (000):

  • if a crime is happening now, or
  • when a life is threatened.

When you phone Triple Zero you will first hear the recorded message: 'You have dialled emergency Triple Zero. Your call is being connected.' An operator will answer your call and ask whether you need police, fire and rescue or ambulance. You DO NOT need to explain your emergency to the operator; simply let them know which service you need.

NOTE: If you call Triple Zero from a mobile phone, the operator will not know where you are calling from. You will need to provide as much information as possible about where you are.

Non-Urgent Crimes

If you need police assistance, but it’s not an emergency, you can phone the police assistance line on 131 444. It is best to contact police as soon as possible to prevent valuable evidence being lost or destroyed and to help with any potential investigations.
Some examples of non-urgent police incidents include, but are not limited to:

  • Property damage
  • Harassment
  • Stealing
  • Drug dealing
  • Stolen vehicles
  • Family violence
