Thank you for your feedback
Holding a volunteer 'Open Day' with your assets location is a great way to engage potential volunteers. Before deciding if this is an appropriate format for your 'Open Day' consider the below:
- Open Day's should be scheduled when the asset is not usually in use. We don't want to cancel shifts to run an Open Day.
- Consider what the weather is likely to be on the day and whether there is appropriate shelter from the elements if required. If you are holding the Open Day at night make sure their is adequate light.
- If the Open Day is being held next to a Service Provider consider choosing a date and time where the Service Provider is closed so that friends don't turn up expecting a wash.
What should I cover in my 'Open Day'?
It is important to remember that volunteers attending the Open Day will be at all different stages of their application process so you will have different levels of understanding of volunteering. We suggest running through the below:
- Introduce yourself and other volunteers hosting the Open Day
- An acknowledgement of country for the lands you are meeting on (AU)
- How Orange Sky shifts and volunteering works
- Operating times and shift length (option to hand out shift location flyers
- Number of volunteers on a team (touch on weekly/fortnightly commitment)
- How long wash/dry takes
- Driving the van (if applicable)
- Importance of connection on shift
- What makes a great conversation
- Orange Sky boundary box
- Show and tell of key features of the van (washers, dryers, orange chairs), no need to go into detail of how to operate the van!
- Talk about the physicality of shift and the importance of being able to perform all tasks involved
- Orange Sky uniform - what to wear
- Safe word and safe places on shift
- Q&A from volunteers
