Shower System
Troubleshooting Guide (TG)

SAFETY CALLOUTS

  • Ensure no one is in the shower before opening the rear doors to inspect the back of the van.
  • Be mindful of your footing when entering or exiting the van. Ensure you use 3 points of contact to enter or exit the van.
  • Wastewater is a biohazard. Wear gloves to protect your hands and ensure your body is far away from the port when opening to avoid any water from splashing onto your body.
  • Do not remove the cap from the hot water system when hot and do not touch the hot water system when in operation as it may burn.
  • When unblocking the shower drain from possible body fluids/waste, use appropriate PPE.

POSSIBLE REASONS FOR CALL

  • Shower drain blocked/not draining
  • No hot water in shower
  • No water coming from shower head
  • Emergency door bell not working

TROUBLESHOOTING

Issue: Shower drain blocked/not draining

1.  Is there a visible blockage covering the drain?

If yes, hair/debris, if the volunteer is comfortable to do so, please unblock the drain using gloves.

If yes, body fluids/waste, if the volunteer is comfortable to do so, use the Bio Hazard kit (should be in the consumables box inside the van) to clean out the shower, using the PPE provided in the kit.

If no, proceed below.

2.  On the control panel, are the power and light icons illuminated green? (this is to ensure the shower waste pump can operate)

If yes, fuse reset or replacement may be needed. Refer to Fuse Reset and Replacement.

If no, ask the volunteer to press the lights button first then the power button second, to illuminate them to green.

  • Ask the volunteer to go and check to see if the shower waste pump starts working/draining water.

After completing the fuse reset or replacement procedure, if the shower is still not draining, submit an Incident Report in MyOS and attempt to scoop out as much water as possible.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Issue: No hot water in shower

1. Has the electrical system been running for more than 5 minutes? By turning the electrical system on, the water heater turns on automatically.

If no, run the water from the shower for a minimum of 2 minutes to assess if the water gets hot.

If yes, proceed below.

2. The silver water heater is located in the back of the van inside the left side door on the back wall.

Above the silver water heater, there is a white box with a small red LED light on it called Water Heater Status, is this light flashing?

If solid, this indicates that there is no apparent error. A fuse reset may resolve the lack of hot water. Refer to the specific Water Heater Fuse Reset instructions in Fuse Reset and Replacement.

If flashing, a repeating loop of 5 short flashes followed by some number of longer pulses indicates there is an error. Confirm what the error is by asking the volunteer to count the number of longer pulses. A fuse reset will be needed to try and resolve the error. Refer to the specific Water Heater Fuse Reset instructions in Fuse Reset and Replacement.

If the water heater light becomes solid after the fuse reset has been done, wait 5-10 minutes to see if the water becomes hot or further errors occur.

3.  After completing the fuse reset procedurethe water heater light is still flashing, check to see if the vehicle diesel tank is more than ¾ full?

If no, the diesel tank will need to be filled then another fuse reset completed, in order for the water heater to produce hot water. Refer to the specific Water Heater Fuse Reset instructions in Fuse Reset and Replacement.

If yes, proceed below.

4. Is the system battery % above 10%?

If yes, proceed below.

If no, turn on the vehicle if it is safe to do (van should be outside/not in an enclosed area, this is to prevent fumes). Plug van into mains power if this is accessible on site.

If the water is still cold, after completing the above steps, the issue cannot be resolved on shift. You will need to either:

  • Continue with cold showers only
  • No showers - washing & drying only
  • Submit an incident report in MyOS.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Issue: No water coming from shower head

1. If connected to mains water, ensure the tap is turned on with sufficient water pressure and there are no kinks in the clean water hose.

If the tap is on and there are no visible kinks, proceed below.

If tap isn’t on or there is a visible kink in the hose, turn on tap and check the water pressure or remove kink. Proceed to turn on the shower.

2.  If running off tank water on board, is the tap icon illuminated green on the control panel?

If yes, proceed to below

If no, turn on the tap button on the control panel. Proceed to turn on the shower.

3.  Ensure clean water tank level is sufficient.

To check for the amount of water on board, there will be clear tubes attached to the tank displaying the water level.

Laundry Van - rear of vehicle under the washing machines

Hybrid Van - to the right hand side of the washers and dryers. When opening the sliding door, look to the right.

4. Is the clean water level visible and above ¼ full?

If no, fill the clean water tank from a mains water supply if accessible.

If yes, check for a blown Shower Clean Pump fuse. If fuse is blown, complete a Fuse Replacement. If fuse is not blown, complete a Fuse Reset. Refer to  Fuse Reset and Replacement.

If there is still no water coming from the shower head, after completing the above steps, the issue cannot be resolved on shift. You will need to either

  • Continue with washing and drying only
  • Submit an incident report in MyOS.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Issue: Emergency door bell not working

If the doorbell is not producing any sound, the issue cannot be resolved on shift. You will need to:

  • Continue with showers, and stay close to the back door in order to hear friends inside the shower
  • Submit an incident report in MyOS.
