What should I talk about on shift?
We know that our first-time volunteers sometimes worry about what to talk about on shift, and that's perfectly normal.
Orange Sky volunteers will tell you that having a conversation on shift is actually really simple. Just think - what would you talk to your friends about? Or your neighbour? The staff at your favourite cafe? Footy scores, the weather, plans for the weekend...
It's important to remember that our friends out on shift are just like you - they have hopes, dreams, families, interests, stories, and all the other life experiences that make us human.
The hour of conversation you share in shift is a time where our friends can relax and feel supported and connected. This can be especially important for friends who don't have this opportunity day-to-day, or are otherwise disconnected from the community.
We have often discovered at shift that the most important part of the conversation isn't what you say, but the way you interact. It's often as simple as being present to that person - that is the gift you bring as a volunteer.
Occasionally, due to the challenges our friends face, these conversations can be a bit sad or overwhelming. If this happens, it's absolutely okay to include another volunteer or the service provider for support.
It can also take time to fully process a conversation, and the effect a conversation has on you might not sink in until days after a shift. The most important thing is to look after yourself by accessing the multiple avenues of support available to you as a volunteer.
Whether it's on shift or days later, away from Orange Sky, we highly encourage you to chat to your team leader or VESP if needed.
