Dryer System
Troubleshooting Guide (TG)

SAFETY CALLOUTS
Black smoke exhausting from the dryers for longer than 10 mins may be dangerous. If excessive smoking occurs, turn off the system and move people away from the exhaust until smoke dissipates.

POSSIBLE REASONS FOR CALL

  • Dryer is not producing any heat (Flashing red LED light on front of dryer)
  • Drum is not spinning
  • Dryer not turning on
  • Dryer exhaust smoking heavily

TROUBLESHOOTING

Issue: Dryer is not producing any heat (Flashing red LED light on front of dryer)

1. On the front of the dryer, there is a small red LED light, on the right of the ‘Start’ button. Is this light flashing?

If the light is flashing, ask how many times it is flashing in a row. It will pause in between sequences, ask the volunteer to confirm the number of flashes after counting twice. Proceed to step 2 below.

If the small red LED light is solid, is the battery level of the van below 10%? If so, plug into mains power or start the vehicle's engine.

If the small red LED light is solid, and the battery is above 10%, check the small white vent on the drivers side of the vehicle and feel if there is cold air blowing. If so, complete the fuse reset procedure. Refer to Fuse Reset and Replacement.

Longer drying times are to be expected when:
  • The dryer drum is ¾ or more filled
  • There is cold/humid weather
  • Drying heavy/dense items such as bedding or jumpers
  • Volunteers open and close the dryer multiple times during a cycle to check on clothing

2. If the small red LED light is flashing and you have counted the number of flashes, refer to error code:

Error code = number of flashes in a row on LED light

1 - Insufficient fuel

Ensure vehicle/pod diesel tank is more than ¾ full, then complete the fuse reset procedure until the flashes have stopped, this could take 2-4 resets.

5 - Overheat protection switch has been activated by the dryer

Complete the fuse reset procedure If error persists, stop the dryer cycle and lodge an incident report. This error requires an inspection by a technician familiar with the Waru Dryer design.

8 - Faulty or damaged heater fan

Stop the dryer cycle and lodge an incident report. There is potentially an obstruction stopping the rotation of the fan, faulty fan motor or a loose electrical connection.

9 - Faulty glow plug

Stop the dryer cycle and lodge an incident report. The glow plug requires replacement.

10 - Overheating/Other

Open the dryer door and complete the fuse reset procedure.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Issue: Drum is not spinning

1. On the front of the dryer, what does the dryer panel display?

If ‘PUSH’, ask volunteer to press the ‘Start’ button on dryer, this should start spinning

If displaying a number (minutes left on the dryer), ask volunteer to press the Start’ button on dryer, this should start spinning.

If by pressing ‘Start’, the dryer does not start spinning, the dryer will not be able to be used during shift. Lodge an incident report and continue shift at reduced capacity of machines.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Issue: Dryer not turning on

1.  What % is the system battery on?

Ensure the lights and power buttons are illuminated green on the control panel (the lights button needs to be turned on before the power can be turned on).

Ensure the battery percentage is above 10%, as displayed on the control panel. If it is below, turn on the vehicle if it is safe to do (van should be outside/not in an enclosed area, this is to prevent fumes). Plug van into mains power if this is accessible on site.

2. Are you currently running the washing machines or are you able to turn them on?

If not,

3. Is there power to the dryers? Can you see a number, code or the word ‘PUSH’ on the front of the dryer panel display?

If the washing machines aren’t able to start also, check the Safety Switch Box to ensure both of the small black switches (Inverter and Inlet) are in the ‘up’ position.

The location of the Safety Switch Box changes from vehicle to vehicle, and pod.

Laundry Pod - Located at the back of the pod on the left hand rear wall. There is only one safety switch installed in the box, the Inlet switch.

Laundry Van - Located behind the driver's seat and dryers. To access the box, fold the driver's seat down or remove the headrest.

Hybrid Van (2 options) - Located either in the back of the van inside the left side door, and mounted on the right wall, or inside the cab of the van, between the drivers and passengers seat on the wall.

4.  Once you have flicked both switches to the ‘up’ position, try starting the dryer again.

If the dryer still does not turn on, as well as the washing machines, proceed to ‘Outcome’ below.

Diagnostic complete, the issue cannot be resolved on shift. You will need to either

  1. Continue shift at reduced capacity, focus on connection with friends
  2. If no friends are present, pack up and go home
  3. Submit an incident report in MyOS

TROUBLESHOOTING

Issue: Dryer exhaust smoking heavily

1.  Has dark grey/black smoke been exhausting from the dryers for longer than 10 mins?

If yes, stop dryer cycles and lodge an incident report. Continue to run shift with washing machines running only.

If no, white/light grey smoke is normal for a few minutes, especially in cold or hot humid weather. Continue to monitor and contact again if the issue persists.
